Chocolate is an irresistible invention that is very popular among humans and cockroaches alike. Unfortunately, those pesky insects are so quick that they get to the raw materials of the goods. It is almost impossible to make sure that foods are 100 percent insect-free. Even the Food and Drug Administration acknowledges this fact and they implemented guidelines in determining acceptable food defect levels. According to FDA’s guidelines, an average of sixty insect parts per 100 grams is deemed safe for food products.
Since cockroaches infest cocoa beans while in the process of turning it into chocolates, cockroach parts and droppings definitely get mixed in it. This is a natural occurrence in chocolate production so switching to a different chocolate brand will not make any significant difference. But do not worry, cockroaches are edible and much healthier than the amount of sugar content of chocolate.
