Famous Children Shows with Terrifying Origins

Many of the stories that are made for children as early as the 18th century and recreated as more advanced media in the present are loosely based on earlier literary works. Such works usually contain horror, violence and obscenity. It is pretty ironic that products meant for kids are derived from originally disturbing content. Hold your breath because the information about the terrifying origins of some famous children shows that are listed below are more than just conspiracy theories made by fans;

1. Peter Pan

In the original story, Peter is an eerie individual who seemed to have psychopathic tendencies. He murdered the members of the Lost Boys who either disobeyed his orders or got too old. People can grow old in Neverland except for one: Peter. It is because he is already dead and lingers as a mere spirit. Rather than a hero, Peter is actually a boogeyman who takes children in their sleep.

2. Sleeping Beauty

Contrary to popular impression, the original character of Prince Philip in Disney's Sleeping Beauty is a vile rapist who sexually took advantage of a woman sleeping in the middle of a forest. In the 17th century version of Giambattista Basile’s Sleeping Beauty, Aurora was found by a passing prince. He raped Aurora while asleep and the poor girl woke up nine months later after giving birth to two children.

3. Red Riding Hood

Red Riding Hood is a story that has been circulating in many parts of Europe as early as the 10th century and has many versions. In one of the earliest versions, the wolf deceived Red Riding Hood into cannibalism and unknowingly consumed her grandmother’s flesh and blood. Then the wolf began to force Red Riding Hood to undress; unwrapping her flesh, getting it ready for consumption.

4. Pinocchio

If you're not familiar with Jiminy Cricket, you may not be able to fully grasp the creepiness on this one. In the original novel, Pinocchio killed the talking cricket by smashing him with a mallet. Pinocchio's reason? Jiminy started giving unsolicited moral advice. The genre partially shifted to horror as the ghost of Jiminy haunted Pinocchio throughout the story.

5. Frozen

Disney’s Frozen is said to be based on a book called The Snow Queen. The story of The Snow Queen follows a demonic troll who created a mirror that produces frightful reflection of anything even for the most beautiful things. The mirror was shattered and its fragments scattered all over the world and pierced the hearts of the people. The event made people cold and cruel in a world wide scale. If you think that was bad enough, it has been worse for one unfortunate little boy who gets struck not only in his heart but also in the eye. To top it all, the seemingly cheerful snowman named Olaf did not exist in this story.
